Tui Na is ancient Chinese form of clinical massage, and another branch of Chinese Medicine. Continuously taught, studied and practiced to this day, its roots stem from a martial arts tradition; therefore it is well suited for musculo-skeletal conditions and injuries, and employs the use of body mechanics derived from martial arts, reducing the risk of injury to the practitioner. Traditionally bone setting is also a technique used in tui na, pre-dating modern chiropractics, but less often practiced today in the West. Usually tui na is practiced with the patient fully clothed. Many hand techniques such as pressing and kneading are used to manipulate soft tissue, release muscle spasms and re-align fascial networks. The theory of the acupuncture meridians and points, as well as the theory of physiology and internal medicine are the same, therefore stimulation of acu-points with just the hands, or acu-puressure, may be an option where needles cannot be tolerated. I often use tui na in conjunction with acupuncture when indicated.
